definition of radiolucent

Date : 26-02-2023

Radiolucent refers to a material or substance that allows X-rays or other forms of radiation to pass through it with minimal attenuation or absorption. Radiolucent materials appear dark on a radiographic image or X-ray because the X-rays pass through them and are not absorbed or blocked. Examples of radiolucent materials include air, some plastics, and certain types of tissues, such as muscle and fat. In medical imaging, radiolucent materials can be useful in highlighting the presence of denser or more opaque structures, which appear lighter on the X-ray image.
