The term "catabolize" refers to the metabolic process by which complex molecules are broken down into simpler ones, releasing energy in the process. This process is also known as catabolism or metabolic degradation. During catabolism, enzymes break down macromolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins into smaller units such as glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids. The energy released during catabolism is used to power cellular processes and is often stored in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the main energy currency of cells.
